The drive from Lucknow to Nepalgunj takes you through scenic rural landscapes, vibrant local life, and serene countryside across Uttar Pradesh and western Nepal, including the key border crossing at Rupaidiha, making it a memorable road trip experience. The journey from Lucknow to Nepalgunj covers approximately 215 kilometers via the route Lucknow → Bahraich → Rupaidiha (border crossing) → Nepalgunj. Retire early for a restful overnight stay, ready for the sacred journey ahead. We will book your stay at Hotel Kalptaru or a similar standard hotel, with twin or triple sharing rooms and attached bathrooms.
Begin your spiritual journey early with a flight from Nepalgunj Airport (165 meters / 541 feet), a key gateway city in western Nepal, to Simikot Airport (2,900 meters / 9,514 feet), located in the remote Humla district. This breathtaking mountain flight offers panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges and surrounding landscapes, perfectly setting the tone for your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by helicopter.
Upon arrival in Simikot, complete the necessary immigration formalities for a smooth border crossing. Next, take a 15-minute helicopter flight to Hilsa (3,640 meters / 11,942 feet), a high-altitude border town in the Karnali region. This helicopter transfer drastically reduces travel time and physical exertion compared to traditional trekking routes.
After landing in Hilsa, undertake a brief 10-minute walk to the Nepal-China border checkpoint. Here, you will go through customs and immigration clearance to officially enter Tibet, China. The well-organized border crossing ensures a seamless transition for pilgrims continuing towards the sacred Mount Kailash.
After crossing the border at Hilsa (3,640 meters / 11,942 feet), travelers enter Tibet for a scenic drive to Taklakot, also known as Purang. The distance between Hilsa and Taklakot is approximately 27 kilometers (17 miles), and the journey takes about one hour by vehicle, depending on road and weather conditions. Immigration formalities are completed upon arrival in Taklakot (3,800 meters / 12,467 feet), a significant Tibetan town that provides basic facilities and serves as the first major stop on the Tibetan plateau. Taklakot also offers a vital opportunity to rest and acclimatize to the high altitude before continuing further into the journey.
You will spend the night at Hotel Himalaya or a similar hotel, offering rest and comfort in preparation for the demanding yet spiritually rewarding journey ahead.
Today is a designated rest and acclimatization day in Taklakot (also known as Purang), situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters (12,467 feet). The market also features traditional Tibetan handicrafts, thangka paintings, and souvenirs.
For those feeling comfortable, a visit to nearby monasteries such as Tsegu Gompa can provide spiritual insight and sweeping views of the Himalayan plateau. The day also offers a moment of quiet reflection, allowing pilgrims to mentally prepare for the deeply spiritual journey ahead.
