Trip Overview Trip Overview

The Ghandruk Trek is one of the most popular short and scenic treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal, located near Pokhara. It is a very easy cultural hiking trail that leads you to the traditional Gurung settlements, terraced farmlands, rhododendron forests and the amazing Himalayan vistas.

The main highlight is Ghandruk Village, a beautiful settlement known for its stone houses, rich Gurung culture, and close-up views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) ranges. This trek is perfect for novices, families and travelers who want a short Himalayan experience without the high altitude or difficulty.

Best Season for Ghandruk Trek

The best time for the Ghandruk Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is clear and the mountain views are at their best. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and colorful forests, while autumn offers crystal-clear skies and stable weather.

Winter (December-February) is also possible but can be freezing at night. Monsoon (June-August) is less suitable because of strong rains and slippery trails.

What Makes Ghandruk Trek Special?

  • The Ghandruk Trek is special because it offers a perfect combination of culture, nature, and Himalayan scenery in a short duration
  • Unlike longer treks, it gives the travelers a chance to experience the real village life, stay in traditional homes and have close interaction with the Gurung population.
  • The spectacular mountains of Annapurna and Machhapuchhre provide a visually stunning backdrop to every occasion.
  • It’s easily reached from Pokhara and is one of the most accessible Himalayan trekking experiences in Nepal.

How Difficult is Ghandruk Trek?

The Ghandruk Trek is considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners and first-time trekkers. Daily walking hours are normally 3 to 6 hours on well-marked pathways.

It is an easy walk with some ups and downs but no hard climbs. The walk can easily be completed with a basic fitness level.

Permits Required for Ghandruk Trek

For the Ghandruk Trek, you will need:

  • ACAP Permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

These permits are checked at various entry points in the Annapurna region and are mandatory for all trekkers.

Safety and Precautions

The Ghandruk trek is generally safe, but basic precautions are important:

  • Always follow marked trails or trek with a guide
  • Use trekking shoes to prevent slipping
  • Stay hydrated when walking
  • Avoid nighttime trekking
  • Check weather conditions daily
  • Respect local culture and traditions in villages

Altitude Sickness and Prevention

Altitude sickness is rare in the Ghandruk trek because the maximum elevation is relatively low compared to other Himalayan treks. However, mild fatigue can occur due to uphill walking.

To stay safe:

  • Walk at a steady, comfortable pace.
  • Drink lots of water
  • Avoid alcohol during the journey.
  • Take short breaks during climbs

Training and Preparation

No advanced training is required, but light preparation helps:

  • Train with a backpack for hiking
  • Stairs or walking up an incline are great ways to improve your legs
  • Stay active at least 2-3 weeks before the expedition

Good physical preparation makes the trek more enjoyable and less tiring.
