Trip Overview

Embark on the ultimate pilgrimage of a lifetime with the 11-day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, starting from Kathmandu and taking you through Nepalgunj, Simikot, and Hilsa to the sacred lands of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet. This carefully curated aerial and overland route blends spiritual awakening with majestic Himalayan scenery, making it ideal for those seeking both divine connection and comfort.

Your journey begins in Kathmandu, the spiritual and cultural heart of Nepal. From here, you’ll take a scenic flight to Nepalgunj, followed by an early morning flight to Simikot, the gateway to northwest Nepal. On the same day, you board a helicopter shuttle to Hilsa, near the Nepal-Tibet border, from where you’ll enter the mystical Tibetan plateau.

After crossing into Tibet, you begin your spiritual expedition to Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash—sacred to followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. Believed to be the earthly embodiment of Mount Meru and the abode of Lord Shiva, Mount Kailash (6,638m) is revered for its transformative energy. Pilgrims perform the three-day Kailash Kora (Parikrama), a challenging 52-km trek that includes the crossing of Drolma La Pass (5,630m)—a symbolic and physically demanding highlight believed to purify one’s karma.

Lake Manasarovar (4,590m), the highest freshwater lake in the world, is believed to wash away sins and grant spiritual peace. Here, pilgrims meditate, bathe, and connect deeply with the sacred surroundings, often performing rituals along the tranquil shores.

After completing the parikrama, you'll return via the same route—Hilsa to Simikot by helicopter, and then fly to Nepalgunj, before catching your connecting flight back to Kathmandu on the same day. This pilgrimage combines spiritual renewal, high-altitude adventure, and breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, supported by an experienced team to ensure safety and comfort throughout the journey.

Travel Route: Kathmandu → Nepalgunj → Simikot → Helicopter to Hilsa → Road to Taklakot → Mansarovar → Darchen → Mount Kailash → Return via same route.

Freqeuntly Asked Questions

In Nepal, the official currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR), while in Tibet (under China), transactions are made using the Chinese Yuan (CNY). For convenience during the Yatra, it’s recommended to carry small denominations of both currencies in cash, as card facilities are extremely limited in remote areas.

Yes, travelers need a visa for Nepal (available on arrival for many nationalities) and a special Tibet Travel Permit, which is arranged by your tour operator as part of the package.

A valid passport (with at least 6 months’ validity), passport-sized photos, visa forms, and a completed medical form are required. Your travel company will assist with all permit formalities.

While no mandatory vaccines are required, it is recommended to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. A medical fitness certificate is often required due to the high altitude.

The baggage allowance is typically 10–12 kg per person, including hand luggage, due to weight limitations on helicopters and small aircraft. Soft bags are recommended.

You must have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and loss of baggage.

Moderate physical fitness is essential. Walking, yoga, and cardio exercises are helpful. Mental preparedness for basic living conditions and high altitude is equally important.

Yes, the altitude can go beyond 6,000 meters. Proper acclimatization days are built into the itinerary, and you should stay hydrated and ascend gradually.

Key stops include Kathmandu, Nepalgunj, Simikot, Hilsa, Taklakot (Purang), Lake Mansarovar, and Mount Kailash. Some itineraries also include Pashupatinath Temple.

The best time is from May to September, when the weather is relatively stable and mountain passes are open.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra presents a moderate level of difficulty, mainly due to the high-altitude conditions, which can impact breathing and overall energy. While most of the journey is manageable with basic fitness, the Kora (Parikrama) around Mount Kailash is physically demanding. It involves trekking at elevations above 5,600 meters, so good stamina, mental endurance, and proper acclimatization are essential for a safe and successful experience.

The weather during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra varies greatly with altitude and time of day. Daytime temperatures usually range from 5°C to 20°C, offering relatively pleasant conditions for travel. However, night temperatures can drop below freezing, especially in high-altitude areas like during the Mount Kailash Parikrama (Kora). Mountain weather is unpredictable, with possibilities of sudden snowfall, strong winds, and cold rain, even during the yatra season (May to September). Pilgrims should be well-prepared with thermal layers, windproof jackets, and waterproof gear to stay warm and safe throughout the journey.

Yes, your tour operator will provide a detailed checklist. Key essentials include warm layered clothing, waterproof gear, trekking shoes, personal medicines, sunscreen, sunglasses, toiletries, snacks, and important documents like your passport and permits.

While most organized Kailash Yatra packages include experienced guides, carrying basic maps or guidebooks can enhance your understanding of the route and local geography. They’re not mandatory but are helpful for personal reference and better appreciation of the journey.

Inclusions: accommodation, meals, permits, guides, transportation, and medical kits. Exclusions: personal expenses, travel insurance, tips, and emergency evacuation (unless specified).

Accommodation varies along the route—from comfortable 3-star hotels in cities like Kathmandu and Nepalgunj to basic guesthouses or tents in remote areas near Mount Kailash. Facilities in Tibet are generally simple and limited, so travelers should be prepared for modest conditions during the pilgrimage.

During the Yatra, pilgrims are usually served simple, nutritious vegetarian meals including staples like rice, lentils, seasonal vegetables, and noodles. Clean drinking water is provided regularly. Most tour operators can accommodate special dietary needs if informed beforehand.

In Nepal, travelers typically enjoy traditional dishes like dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) and momos (steamed dumplings). As you enter Tibet, the cuisine shifts to simple Tibetan fare such as noodles, hearty soups, and various types of bread. The flavors are generally mild, making the meals suitable for the high-altitude environment.

Yes, You need special permits like the Tibet Travel Permit and Military Permit for the Yatra. Your tour operator usually arranges these for you. These are essential for crossing into Tibet and undertaking the pilgrimage. Usually, your tour operator will handle all permit arrangements to ensure a hassle-free journey.

If you’re unable to finish the Parikrama, you can return to the base camp at Darchen and wait for your group. In case of emergencies, evacuation support and medical assistance are available, so your safety is always a priority during the Yatra.

Yes, the route is popular among Indian and international pilgrims during the season, particularly around full moon dates.

Support during the Yatra includes experienced guides, local Tibetan staff, Sherpas, porters, cooks, and sometimes medical professionals depending on the group size. Guides ensure smooth navigation and cultural insights, porters assist with luggage, cooks provide meals, and medical teams help manage altitude sickness and emergencies.

The guides for the Yatra are licensed professionals with extensive experience in high-altitude trekking and travel within Tibet. Many are multilingual and trained in basic first aid to ensure safety and smooth communication throughout the journey.

Tipping is customary on the Yatra. It’s recommended to tip guides around $10–$15 per day and support staff $5–$10 per day. Most major expenses like accommodation, meals, and permits are included in your package, so daily out-of-pocket costs are generally minimal.

To book the Yatra, you typically need to submit a booking form, provide a passport copy, and pay an advance of 30–50%. The remaining balance is due as per your tour operator’s payment schedule.

Some customization is possible, mainly during the Nepal segment of the journey. However, the Tibet portion follows a fixed itinerary set by government regulations, so changes there are very limited.

Cancellation fees vary depending on how far in advance you cancel, with Tibet permit fees typically non-refundable. It’s important to carefully review your tour operator’s cancellation policy and secure comprehensive travel insurance to protect against unforeseen changes.
